What is Vancomycin HCl?
Vancomycin hydrochloride is the salt of a glycopeptide antibiotic isolated from Amycolatopsis orientalis in 1956. Vancomycin exhibits potent activity against Gram positive bacteria and is highly effective against MRSA in vitro and in vivo. Vancomycin interferes with cell wall synthesis by binding to D-alanine-D-alanine residues. |
Function of Vancomycin HCl
Vancomycin is used for serious bacterial infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to this drug when penicillins and cephalosporins are ineffective for diseases such as sepsis, endocarditis, pneumonia, pulmonary abscess, osteomyelitis, meningitis, and enterocolitis, or when penicillins and cephalosporins cannot be tolerated by patients. Vancomycin is the drug of choice for infections caused by methicillin-resistant forms of S. aureus, S. epidermidus, and other coagulase-negative staphylococci, as well as for endocarditis, diphtherioid infections, and for patients very sick with colitis caused by C. difficile. Application of Vancomycin HCl
1. Kill bacteria by inhibiting the growth and reproduction of bacteria. This drug interferes with the synthesis of the cell wall by interfering with peptidoglycan, a key component in the structure of the bacterial cell wall, and inhibits the production of phospholipids and polypeptides in the cell wall.
2. Vancomycin is mainly used in the treatment of infections in four aspects: first, the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections; in addition, it is also used in the treatment of antibiotic-resistant pseudomembranous enteritis caused by Clostridium difficile.
3. Vancomycin can also be used to treat colitis and intestinal inflammation; Vancomycin is also often used to prevent infection when installing cardiac catheters, venous catheters and other devices. Vancomycin can be used alone or in combination.
