What is Colistin sulfate? Colistin sulfate, also known as colistin sulfate, Colistin, polymyxin E (PolymyxinE), antienemycin, etc., is white or near white powder, odorless, bitter and hygroscopic, easily soluble in Water, slightly soluble in methanol and ethanol, almost insoluble in acetone, ether, etc., free base is slightly soluble in water. Stable within the range of PH3-7.5. Colistin sulfate is produced by Bacillus polymyxa, has strong antibacterial effect on Gram-negative bacteria, is used to treat intestinal diseases caused by Gram-negative bacteria, and is used as a feed additive.

Function of Colistin sulfate

Colistin sulfate is a toxin synthesized, produced and released by bacteria, consisting of O-specific side chains, core polysaccharides and lipid A. All antibiotics have the problem of causing bacterial endotoxin release, and colistin sulfate has the lowest bacterial endotoxin release. More importantly, colistin sulfate can neutralize endotoxin by binding to the negatively charged phosphate on the bacterially produced endotoxin lipid A through the positively charged -NH2.
