What is Minoxidil ?
Minoxidil was the first drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (hair loss). Before that, minoxidil had been used as vasodilator drug prescribed as oral tablet to treat high blood pressure, with side effects that included hair growth and reversal of male baldness. |
Function of Minoxidil
Minoxidil directly dilates arterioles, thereby lowering blood pressure, but the exact mechanism is unknown. This product does not dilate venules. Reduced peripheral vascular resistance causes reflex heart rate to increase and cardiac output to increase. Increased renin activity after blood pressure reduction causes water and sodium retention.
